Minimal Gallery is excited to present Dung Beetle - Bushwick Scarabs, a group exhibition comprised of selected works by eleven Bushwick-based artists. The project, curated by Adam Krueger, embraces community, while showcasing exceptional local artists, whose work Adam has long admired.
The exhibition was born out of love and respect for the incredible community of artists whose studios are scattered across Bushwick and evolved into a visually rich showcase of voices from very diverse approaches to artmaking. Painters, sculptors, illustrators, fashion designers and photographers are connected in the show not only by community, but the continuing motif of black and white. Each artist breathes life into the materials at their disposal, with real depth and great skill, despite being confined to a monochromatic palette, stripped of color. The limited color palette allows each of these artists advanced concepts and techniques to shine.
Among the works included are: Julian Budea’s classical-styled sculptures in which the abstracted mark-making takes precedence; Eleanna Cadalso’s unconventional sculptural purses that reanimate obsolete materials; the twisted reflections of Dan Gausman’s work that become cultural relics in reverse; Victoria Hurst’s abstract paintings that delve into the intersections between science, alchemy and the collective unconscious; Adam Krueger’s unromantic and humorously nonfictional mixed media self-portrait, photographs and drawings from Sergio Martinez that tap into the vibrations that occur when we encounter repetition; Grant McGrath’s architectural blueprint-like painting that uses expressive brushstrokes to explore the tension between order and chaos; MikaMika’s algorithmic asslemblages that are an exploratory study into generative visual AI; a mixed media sculpture from Tony Saborio that captures the complex interplay of romance and emotional struggle; a seductively powerful sculptural latex piece from one of the most prominent latex couture house, Tableaux Vivants; and Zeeb’s collaged art works that both are beautiful and deeply unsettling in the abstract way they are dissected and meticulously rejoined.
The Dung Beetle, part of the Scarab family, is the world’s strongest animal relative to its size. Due to the metamorphosis it undergoes during its life cycle, it is a symbol of transformation, personal growth, and the potential for change. The ancient Egyptians believed the beetles were self-made, that they created themselves out of nothing, while their ability to bury themselves and emerge unharmed reinforced the idea of resilience during life's challenges.
