Julian Budea has worked as a sculptor for over 20 years in stone, clay, plaster, and wood.

As a youngster in Romania, Julian’s mother registered him in an afterschool program for drawing and painting. He started drawing plaster casts of Ancient Greek sculptures and Michelangelo’s Moses which left a deep impression on him. He attended high school in the U.S., during which time he went back to Romania for a sculpture summer camp where he started stone carving. The tradition of the Romanian school stayed with him, while also being immersed in the arts at Cooper Union in New York City. It provided a foundation from which departures are easily accessible.

For Julian, the sculpture process is a search for form. From rough to finished, Julian leaves traces of the process such as chisel marks. The artwork takes shape from the abstraction of the marks. Ideas come along while working. There’s is no telling what the artwork would look like when it is done. Julies tries to bring out an emotion in the material, but also lets the material dictate the emotion.
