Ruoyo Gong
Ruoyu Gong is a New York-based painter whose work delves into the complexity of the human psyche through figurative narratives centered on personal symbolism.
Gong earned his BFA with honors in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2023 and is currently pursuing his MFA in painting at the esteemed New York Academy of Art.
Gong is fascinated by the balance of control and spontaneity in oil paint. His work draws on monotype printmaking, where unpredictable motifs create figures on the edge of entropy. Elements like form, value, and composition arise through instinct, like visual "slips of the tongue." This approach reveals a reality beneath the surface of the unconscious, with narratives that emerge through iterations, maintaining a tension between control and chance. This creates a dreamlike space where the rational and the spontaneous merge.
His work also reflects the complexity of my fragmented cultural identity, particularly the absurdity of cultural assimilation. Raised abroad, Gong grapples with the tension between fitting into American society and reconnecting with his Chinese heritage. To explore this, he draws inspiration from Chinese art, blending it with Western oil painting.
